Can you “really” make money online as a Transcriptionist?

Transcription is a real job, and yes you can earn a living from it. The key is to know where to find reputable companies who offer transcription job opportunities. Many companies offering freelance transcription base their rate of pay on audio hours. This means that you get paid for the amount of time of the final product, not the amount of time that you spend creating the file. It is estimated a highly skilled transcriptionist will take around double the time to create the file as that of the final file. For example, if you create a final file of 1 hour, it will likely take you 2 hours or more to transcribe the file. In this case you will be paid for 1 hour, but you will have worked 2 hours. If you are a beginner, you can expect the transcribed file to take longer.

If you are interested in learning transcription, you will also need to keep in mind the level of accuracy that is needed in your final product (the completed file). A file may be rejected for payment if the grammar is incorrect or there are spelling errors, in which case you will have to make adjustments and re-submit the corrected file. So, you can see how easy it might be to spend hours transcribing a file, but only getting paid for the length of final product.

Benefits of Transcription Work

One of the reasons transcription is such a popular choice for people trying to earn money to support themselves, is there are a lot of benefits. Some of the upsides include working from home (a huge perk for stay at home moms/dads), no requirement to talk on the phone or to interact with annoying co-workers or bosses and flexibility to work whenever it's convenient for you, day or night; again great for stay at home parents.

How can I find Transcription jobs?

There are many companies that offer transcription job opportunities. Some of them will train you and pay you as an employee. Others are freelance. Employers of transcriptionists will pay higher because of the legal minimum wage requirement. Companies offering freelance may pay what they choose and tend to be on the lower side for beginning transcriptionists.
